PRONEM in Santa Catarina

Researchers from four institutions in the state of Santa Catarina,Brazil, were contemplated in the Public Call for Research Grant of FAPESC / CNPq 06/2012 - Support Program for Emergent Groups (PRONEM) with the proposal "Mycorrhizal inoculants for agriculture and forestry: consolidating the research on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in Santa Catarina". The project aims to produce AMF based inoculant and test its efficiency in agricultural crops and forest species under field and controlled conditions. The group is coordinated by Dr. Sidney L. Stürmer (Regional University of Blumenau) and participating investigators are Dr. Paulo Emilio Lovato, Dr. Claudio F. S. Soares and Dra. Sonia Purin from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Dr. Alvaro Mafra and Dr. Osmar Klauberg Filho from the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, and Dr. Murilo Dalla Costa from the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina  (EPAGRI)
The project focuses on the study of six different isolates of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) obtained from soils in Santa Catarina and testing the efficiency of these fungi in agricultural species such as apple, onion and vine and woody tree species used for reclamation. Besides to develop AMF based formulations for inoculant and to characterize  the AMF isolates  using morphology and molecular traits, the project will test the effectiveness of the inoculum using terrestrial model ecosystems, a completely innovative research area with mycorrhiza in Brazil.
A homepage for the project will be available soon within the pages of CICG.
