Since 1998, the University of Blumenau (FURB) has actively fostered international partnerships with Higher Education Institutions across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Committed to advancing academic excellence and global engagement, FURB promotes the exchange of students, faculty, and administrative staff through a wide range of collaborative programs.
These initiatives aim to enhance professional development, encourage intercultural dialogue, and support joint research and innovation across disciplines. FURB’s internationalization strategy reflects its dedication to building a dynamic and inclusive academic environment that connects knowledge across borders.
The University
Blumenau University (FURB) was established in 1964 as a result of a community-driven initiative aimed at providing young people in the region with access to higher education.
FURB offers a wide range of programs across all fields of knowledge and at various academic levels: Undergraduate, Sequential and Specialization Courses, Master's and Doctoral Degrees, Language and Secondary Education Programs. In addition, the university actively promotes and supports Research, Extension, and Cultural projects.
The City
Blumenau: A Charming Blend of European Heritage and Innovation
Founded in 1850, Blumenau is a city in southern Brazil that captivates visitors with its rich European heritage. From its picturesque architecture and delicious cuisine to its lush natural landscapes, vibrant festivals, and thriving industries, Blumenau offers a unique experience for travelers from around the world.
Strategically located near major Mercosur cities and the key port infrastructure of Santa Catarina, Blumenau plays a vital role in Brazil’s economy. The city stands out in sectors such as Textile Manufacturing being one of the country’s leading hubs and Information Technology, with a growing ecosystem of startups and innovation centers.

Desde 1998, a FURB estabeleceu, de forma efetiva e contínua, diversos convênios com Instituições de Ensino Superior da Europa, América do Norte, América Latina, Ásia e África.
Buscando promover a qualificação e atualização do conhecimento, a Universidade desenvolve trabalhos em cooperação com instituições estrangeiras por meio de intenso programa de intercâmbio de alunos, professores e servidores técnico-administrativos das mais diversas áreas.
Dentre as principais atividades estão: promover intercâmbio e assessoria intercultural; recepção e acompanhamento de alunos e professores estrangeiros; cooperação na área da pesquisa; estabelecer acordos de cooperação com Universidades no exterior; divulgar informações sobre cursos, eventos, bolsas de estudo e programas de intercâmbio de instituições estrangeiras.
ACADEMIC EXCHANGE OF STUDENTS
Partner Universities
Exchange students from partner universities can study at FURB without paying tuition fees.
Through international agreements, FURB welcomes students for academic experiences that may include classes, research projects, or internships in local companies—depending on availability. These opportunities are offered for one semester or up to one academic year, providing a rich cultural and educational experience in southern Brazil.
Free Mover
Students from universities without a formal agreement with FURB can still apply for an academic exchange as a Free Mover.

Application Deadline
Partner University and Free Mover
1st semester – Summer
- From February to July (dates subject to change)
- Registrations accepted up to 30th October.
2nd semester – Winter
- From August* to December.
- Registrations accepted up to 30th April.

After receiving the Letter of Acceptance, the exchange student must apply for VITEM IV Student Visa. (See the instructions on the website of the Brazilian Consulate of your country).
LANGUAGE SKILLS REQUIRED
At FURB, most courses are taught in Portuguese.
However, some subjects are offered in English
To enroll in classes taught in Portuguese, students must have at least an intermediate level of proficiency in the language.
Likewise, for courses offered in English, an intermediate level of English is required.
This ensures that students can follow the lessons, participate actively, and make the most of their academic experience at FURB.
Portuguese for Foreigners
Exchange students can take Portuguese classes for foreigners free of charge.
If you're interested in joining the course, simply indicate your preference when completing the Application Form.
These classes are a great way to improve your language skills and make your experience at FURB even more enriching.
